MUSKEGON COUNTY, MI - A busy section of the freeway is expected to close Wednesday night through the weekend.
The Michigan Department of Transportation is investing approximately $700,000 to replace a drainage system under I-96 in Muskegon County, just east of the Hile Road interchange.
As a result, eastbound I-96 is scheduled to close from 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 23, through 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 27. This closure follows the westbound closure previously scheduled for Oct. 18-21.
Drivers can detour the construction by taking southbound U.S. 31 to eastbound M-104.
MDOT officials said the project will improve drainage and extend the service life of I-96.
Additionally, based on economic modeling, the investment is expected to directly and indirectly support eight jobs.
The overall project will cause lane closures, traffic shifts and intermittent ramp closures at adjacent interchanges, which will be in effect through late November.
