BeGole’s primary win sets up November rematch for state House seat

LANSING, MI — State House Rep. Brian BeGole will continue his campaign to keep his District 71 seat.

BeGole bested his Republican opponent, Kevin Rathbun, during the Tuesday, Aug. 6, primary election. Voters chose BeGole, 7,265 to 3,550 votes, according to unofficial results.

The victory means BeGole in the November general election will go up against Democrat Mark D. Zacharda, who faced no opposition from his political party Tuesday.

BeGole, the former Shiawassee County sheriff, emerged victorious the last time voters chose between him and Zacharda too.

Voters first elected BeGole to the Michigan House of Representatives’ District 71 seat in November 2022, when he bested Zacharda, 25,156 votes to 18,408 votes.

In Saginaw County, District 71 covers the villages of Chesaning and Oakley as well as Brady and Maple Grove townships. In Genesee County, the district includes Argentine and Gaines townships as well as a chunk of Mundy Township. The district features more than two dozen Shiawassee County municipalities, including Corunna, Durand and New Lothrop.

Election officials consider the initial primary election results as an unofficial tally. Official results will follow the certification process from state and county election officials.
