Former attorney wins primary, will face incumbent for Northern Michigan U.S. House seat

TRAVERSE CITY, MI -- U.S. Rep. Jack Bergman, R-Watersmeet, has won the Republican nomination in the U.S. House District 1 race, and will face Democrat Callie Barr in the Nov. 5 election.

The Associated Press called the election in favor of Bergman at 9:29 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 6, and in favor of Barr at 12:10 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 7. With 78% of the vote counted, Bergman earned 77,322 votes (79%) compared to opponent Josh Saul’s 20,525.

On the Democratic side, Barr had 34,938 votes (58%) compared to Bob Lorinser’s 24,892 votes, with 78% of votes in.

Bergman, of Watersmeet, has represented District 1 since 2017. He served as a lieutenant general in the U.S. Marine Corps and had a 22-year career as a commercial airline pilot, according to his website.

Barr, of Traverse City, said her occupation is a full-time candidate. She is a University of Michigan Law School and Central Michigan University graduate with a bachelor’s degree in secondary education. She said she has advocated for military families with Blue Star Families and the Rosalynn Carter Institute for Caregivers. She is a former educator and attorney.

Barr and Bergman will face off for the seat on Nov. 5. The winner will earn a two-year term. District 1 encompasses the Upper Peninsula and northern Lower Michigan, including Traverse City and Alpena.
