GRAND RAPIDS, MI – School security workers confiscated a knife that was found in an Ottawa Hills High School student’s bag after a fight.

The incident happened just before the start of school Tuesday, Oct. 22.

Grand Rapids Public Schools’ public safety and school security officers, along with administrators, responded within seconds to stop the fight. Afterwards, officers confiscated the knife that was found in a student’s nearby bag.

The fight, involving multiple students, is believed to have stemmed from altercations over the weekend outside of school, Principal Timothy Mabin said in a letter to parents.

“We are grateful that no one was injured, and the situation was quickly brought under control,” he said.

He said that school officials are trying to determine how the knife got through metal detectors.

“This incident serves as an important reminder for families and scholars to discuss what items are appropriate and safe to bring to school. I also encourage you to take advantage of the school safety resources provided by GRPS, which include information on safe weapon storage, access to free gun locks, and safety training sessions,” the principal said.
