Huizenga wards off GOP challenger in Southwest Michigan U.S. Congress race

KALAMAZOO, MI -- U.S. Rep. Bill Huizenga, R-Zeeland, will get a chance to defend his seat in the U.S. House of Representatives, as he beat his challenger in the Republican primary on Tuesday, Aug. 6,

The Associated Press called the U.S. House District 4 race in favor of Huizenga at 10:36 p.m. With 40% of votes counted, Huizenga earned 23,812 votes (70.3%) compared to 10,045 for Brendan Muir.

Huizenga will face Democrat Jessica Swartz, who ran unopposed in the primary, on the Nov. 5 ballot.

The 4th District, which includes all of Allegan and Van Buren counties, and parts of of Berrien, Calhoun, Kalamazoo and Ottawa counties. The district includes the cities of Battle Creek, Holland, Kalamazoo, Portage, South Haven, St. Joseph and others.

In addition to serving as 4th District representative since 2022, Huizenga is a small business operator and co-owner of Huizenga Gravel Co. in Georgetown Township. Previously, he was a realtor, district director and representative for the 90th District in Michigan State Legislature.
