Indiana crushed Nebraska 56-7 on Saturday, but it wasn’t all good news for the surprising Hoosiers.
Starting quarterback Kurtis Rourkesuffered a thumb injury in the win and is out indefinitely, the school announced. He is expected to return at some point this season but when is unclear.
The Hoosiers (7-0) host Washington on Saturday with ESPN’s “College Gameday” in Bloomington for the first time. IU travels to Michigan State on Nov. 2 and hosts Michigan on Nov. 9.
Rourke, a transfer from Ohio who did not play in the second half, injured his thumb while getting hit on a pass attempt in the second quarter.
He threw for 189 yards on 17-of-21 passing with one touchdown and one interception while leading the Hoosiers to a 28-7 halftime lead before exiting.
Overall, Rourke has been a major reason why Indiana has surged to No. 13 in the Associated Press poll. The senior has completed nearly 75% of his passes for 1,941 yards, 15 touchdowns and 3 interceptions this season.
He will be replaced by backup Tayven Jackson in the short term. Jackson, a transfer from Tennessee who started five games for Indiana in 2023, threw for 91 yards and two touchdowns on 7-of-8 passing in relief of Rourke vs. the Huskers.
Indiana is 7-0 for the first time since its last Big Ten title in 1967.
