KALAMAZOO, MI -- Kalamazoo-area residents voted on a variety of races and proposals in the Tuesday, Aug. 6, primary election.
In partisan races, one candidate from each party advances to the Nov. 5 election.
Below is a look at every contested race and proposal that appeared on ballots in Kalamazoo County, depending on where voters live.
Once all precincts have reported, the winning candidates will be bolded.

National/state races
U.S. Senate:
U.S. House, District 4:
The top vote-getting Republican in this race will face Democrat Jessica Swartz in the Nov. 5 election.
Michigan State House, District 40:
The winner will go against Republican Kelly Sackett in November for the state legislature seat.
Michigan State House, District 41:
The top vote-getter on Aug. 6 will face incumbent Democrat Julie Rogers and Libertarian Rafael Wolf.
Michigan State House, District 42:
The winner will face Democrat Austin Marsman in the Nov. 5 general election.
Local races
Kalamazoo County Sheriff:

- James J. Charon (R): 11,288 (68.3%)
- Sabrina Pritchett-Evans (R): 5,189 (31.4%)
The winner will face incumbent Democrat Richard Fuller in the Nov. 5 election.
Kalamazoo County Clerk:

- Emily Crawford (R): 5,902 (39.3%)
- Kathleen Olmsted (R): 9,037 (60.2%)
The winner will face incumbent Democrat Meredith Place in the Nov. 5 election.
Kalamazoo County Treasurer:

- Pamela Herbert (R): 4,277 (25.1%)
- Dale Shugars (R): 12,696 (74.5%)
The winner will face incumbent Democrat Thomas Whitener in the Nov. 5 election.
Kalamazoo County Commission, District 2:

- Gary Mitchell (R): 454 (59.7%)
- Andrew Smith (R): 301 (39.6%)
The winner will face incumbent Democratic Commissioner Jen Strebs in the November general election.
Kalamazoo County Commission, District 4:

- Sarah Joshi (D): 1,441 (43.9%)
- Abby Wheeler (D, incumbent): 1,838 (56.0%)
The winner will face Republican candidate Jason Mikkelborg for a four-year term on the Kalamazoo County Board of Commissioners.
Climax Township Clerk:

- Murat Bates (R): 42 (14.1%)
- Sarah DeBoer (R): 255 (85.9%)
The winner of the Aug. 6 primary is set to run unopposed on the Nov. 5 ballot.
Comstock Township Supervisor:

- Christopher Daniels (R): 696 (47.4%)
- Benjamin Martin (R): 767 (52.2%)
- Mark Mort (D): 331 (24.8%)
- Randy Thompson (D, incumbent): 998 (74.7%)
The top vote-getters from each party will face each other in the Nov. 5 General Election.
Comstock Township Treasurer:

- Sandra Bloomfield (R): 873 (57.9%)
- Clyde “Bub” Sherwood (R, incumbent): 632 (41.9%)
The top vote-getter will go on to face Democratic candidate Roger Poe in November.
Cooper Township Supervisor:

- Diane Bushouse (R): 254 (21.2%)
- Jeff Sorensen (R, incumbent): 618 (51.7%)

The winner will run against Democrat Jim Frederick in November.

The top four vote-getters in the Republican primary will run against Democratic candidate Cristine Wiles.

The top vote-getter is set to run unopposed in November for a four-year term.

- Kristin Cole (D, incumbent): 2,132 (25.3%)
- Zak Ford (D, incumbent): 1,755 (20.8%)
- Tom Graham (D): 1,010 (12.0%)
- Neil Sikora (D, incumbent): 1,781 (21.1%)
Republicans Andrea Lundgren and Rob Viland were unopposed on Aug. 6 and appear on the Nov. 5 ballot.
Richland Township Clerk:
Three Republicans are are running as write-in candidates for Richland Township Clerk. These results won’t be available until later, since they’re all write-in candidates.

If there aren’t any write-in candidates in August or November, the winner of the August primary will win the race for clerk.

The four winners will run against Democrats Barb Hammon and Dennis Smith in November.
9th Circuit Court Judge, new judgeship:

- Christine Morse: 19,148 (53.3%)
- Mariko Willis: 9,892 (27.5%)
The top two vote-getters will earn a spot on the Nov. 5 ballot. The winner in November earns an eight-year term.

Kalamazoo County Senior Millage renewal

Kalamazoo County voters will decide whether to keep paying a tax to support seniors during the Tuesday, Aug. 6 election.
- Yes: 34,193 (77.6%)
- No: 9,882 (22.4%)
Climax Township Fire Department Millage renewal
(1 of 1 precincts reporting)
Voters in Climax Township will be asked to renew a tax to support the local fire department, which was previously approved by voters in 2014.
- Yes: 375 (74.1%)
- No: 131 (25.9%)
Ross Township Fire Protection Millage renewal
(2 of 2 precincts reporting)
Ross Township voters will decide whether to continue to fund firefighting services in the township.
The proposed millage is for 1 mill for the next five years.
- Yes: 990 (74.0%)
- No: 348 (26.0%)
Van Buren Intermediate Schools Special Education Millage renewal proposal
(38 of 38 precincts reporting)
Voters who live in the Van Buren Intermediate Schools territory considered a special education millage renewal proposal. The 0.8955-mill proposal would raise $4.5 million in its first year.
- Yes: 9,796 (67.5%)
- No: 4,714 (32.5%)
Portage Public Schools proposal to renew building and site sinking fund
(25 of 25 precincts reporting)
Portage Public Schools asked voters to renew a millage that enables the district to make necessary repairs to buildings without having to borrow money.
- Yes: 7,537 (67.8%)
- No: 3,580 (32.2%)
Charles A. Ransom District Library Millage renewal proposal
(6 of 6 precincts reporting)
If approved, the millage would continue at its current rate of 0.58 mills in perpetuity.
- Yes: 1,871 (60.8%)
- No: 1,205 (39.2%)
