Brad Devereaux is a reporter in Kalamazoo, Michigan. He worked as a news editor in Lovell, Wyoming, beginning in 2007, and joined MLive in 2011 as a Kalamazoo Gazette intern focusing on public safety. He transferred to Saginaw in 2012, covering public safety and the fallout of street violence. Devereaux's coverage of the Oakley Police Department brought awareness of the chief's squad that included Kid Rock and millionaires who lived far from town. The police chief was later sent to prison. Devereaux worked as a member of MLive's statewide team and wrote about topics like police, cannabis and firearms. He joined the Kalamazoo news team and his work helped inspire a change in 2021, when Kalamazoo city commissioners voted to replace private meetings with public meetings. His coverage of Kalamazoo air quality concerns revealed the inner workings of how state and local government are dealing with the toxic threat. Awards include: 2022 Michigan Chapter Emmy Award for a team project on environmental justice; a 2021 Michigan Associated Press Media Editors Public Service award for government reporting; 2020 and 2015 Michigan Associated Press Media Editors First Amendment Awards, and a 2016 Wade H. McCree Award for the Advancement of Justice.
