DETROIT, MI – A 57-year-old runner collapsed and died on Sunday, Oct. 20, during the annual Detroit Free Press Marathon.
The man, who has not been identified, collapsed during the Canada stretch of the 26.2-mile race, which starts and finishes in downtown Detroit, according to the Detroit Free Press. The runner died near the fifth mile.
Runners cross over on the Ambassador Bridge and return through the Detroit-Windsor tunnel.
The runner was transported to Windsor Regional Hospital, Ouellette Campus, a race official told the news outlet, where he was pronounced dead.
“Our condolences go out to him and his family. It’s a sad time for us,” Race Director Aaron Velthoven told the Free Press. “We’re saddened by this and our hearts go out to (the family).”
