How to vote
Michigan residents have several ways to vote.
Absentee: Registered voters can request an absentee ballot online through the state’s online absentee voter request form. Voters can request an absentee ballot up to 75 days before an election by submitting a completed absentee ballot application to their local clerk.
Related: Want to use Michigan’s new early in-person voting? It might be a long commute.
Early in-person: The early voting period begins the second Saturday prior to Election Day and ends the Sunday before an election, the Michigan Secretary of State website states. However, some communities may decide to provide up to 28 days of early voting.
For the 2024 general election cycle, that means early voting could begin anytime between Monday, Oct. 7, and Saturday, Oct. 26. Check with your local clerk to identify when early voting launches in your community.
On election day: Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. local time. Voters have the right to cast ballots if they are in line at a polling place by 8 p.m.
Where can I check if I’m registered to vote?
Michiganders can check online with the Department of State to see a number of things, including:
- Whether they are registered to vote;
- Where their nearest ballot drop boxes are;
- Where their polling place is located, if voting in person, and;
- Where their local clerk’s office is.
